Overview Rules of Racketlon
Rules – Basic Principle
Generally the standard rules of the individual sports (table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis) apply.
The following rules are exceptions and extensions which take effect in racketlon.
Method of Counting
- 4 sets up to 21 points - In each discipline (table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis) one set is played to 21 points. At 20:20 the set goes on until there is a 2-point difference.
- Running Score - Each point counts no matter who's serving or returning.
- Serving player keeps score - It is the serving player's responsibility to keep score and communicate clearly with his opponent.
- Total points count - However has more points in total wins the match. This means that is is possible that you can lose three sets but win big in the fourth and walk away with a victory. The match is stopped as soon as one player has an uncatchable lead and the remaining points don't have any effect on the end score anymore (except for group matches).
- Gummiarm - Deciding Point - If the two players end up with exactly the same amount of points at the end of their match (tie) there is a deciding point that is played out in tennis (respectively the last discipline in case the order was switched). A coin toss decides who gets to choose serve/return. In tennis the server only gets one serve (no second serve).
Order of the Disciplines
- Table Tennis, Badminton, Squash, Tennis - Smallest to biggest racket. The order can be changed if the given infrastructure doesn't allow for normal play. However, in that case all matches in the tournament need to be played in the same order.
Serve and Side Change
- Coin toss - Before the match starts a coin toss decides on the privilage to choose serve or return. Whoever starts serving in table tennis will start returning in badminton, serving in squash and returning again in tennis. The returner can choose the side ahead of every discipline.
- Side Change at 11 - When one of the two players reaches 11 points the sides are changed (exception in squash) and a break of 30 seconds is allowed.
- Two Serves - The server always gets to serve twice in a row. He'll always start from the right side of the court and subsequently serves his second one from the left side of the court (exception in table tennis).
- At 20:20 one serve each - At 20:20 each player gets to serve once before switching. Player A serves from right to left after which player B serves also from right to left. Then player A serves from left to right, and so on...
Timing Rules
- 30 Seconds at Side Change - Players get a 30 second break whenever they switch sides (first player to reach 11 points). In squash it will be just a break without the side change obviously.
- 5 Minutes between Sets - Players get 5 minutes between two disciplines. 2,5 minutes to transfer to the next court and 2,5 minutes for a quick warm up. The first point of the new set has to start at the latest 5 minutes after the last point of the last set has ended.
- Continuous Play - Matches must be carried out in a continuous manner without deliberately delaying play.
- Ask Referee for Break - Players may ask the referee or their opponent for a short drinking/toweling break. If the referee denies this request the player is not allowed to leave the court. In case there are sweaty spots on the court, players are allowed to clean up after having asked permission from the referee or opponent.
Penalties
- The referee has the possibility to call penalties on players who engage in misconduct such as cursing, loud screaming, dangerous play, harassment or throwing rackets:
1. Occurrence: Warning
2. Occurrence: Player loses next point
3. Occurrence: Player loses set
4. Occurrence: Player loses match and is disqualified from the tournament
Linesmen
- Each player calls on his/her side of the court. In case a player doesn't agree with a call/decision of his opponent, he/she will have to accept this call, however has the option to demand a referee be present for the rest of the match.
Injuries
- 5 Minutes Time-out - Each player may use a time-out of 5 minutes if the injury obviously hinders him in his ability to move/play.
- No open Wounds- It is not allowed to keep playing with open wounds.
- Squash Injuries - In squash, if an injury occurs due to a collision with the opponent and it was clearly the opponent's fault, the player gets as much time as he needs in order to recover. The referee may call a penalty on his discretion.
