Malta Open

What a weekend in Malta! Congratulations to all the medals won by Swiss players!

Friday:

Men's B Doubles
The men's B doubles was won by Patrick Bürgi and his English partner James Langworthy won. After the victory in the semifinals over Anna-Klara Ahlmer and Miryam Enmer, who played in the men's doubles due to a missing elite women's doubles category, was followed by a victory in the final against the Italian/Maltese victory over the Italian/Maltese doubles team of Scalvini/Spiteri. With the third place of Graham King and his partner Kim Ljunberg another podium place could be achieved for Switzerland.

Saturday:

Women’s B Singles – Gummiarm Triumph Helps Wavre to First Singles Title
Without a shadow of a doubt, the comeback result of the weekend goes to Gaëlle Wavre. The Swiss talent has won two Mixed Doubles titles with Nicolas Lenggenhager but never found silverware on the singles court before. That changed in Malta. Wavre opened with a relatively straightforward victory against Sabrina Carew. With Katrin Maldre forced to withdraw, Wavre and Carew were joined by Zuzana Vancuríková in a three-way battle for the title. That became a two-player battle when Vancuríková defeated Carew, leaving a decider between her and Wavre.

Men's A Singles

Another bronze medal was won by Nicolas Lenggenhager. Unfortunately, he missed the finals by only one single point against Kresten Hougaard. As Malte Thyregod was forced to withdraw from his bronze medal match, Nicolas Lenggenhager joining Leon Griffiths and Kresten Hougaard on the podium.

Men’s C Singles – Truc Holds Off Newcomers to Win in Malta
The Men’s C Singles was an intriguing category to preview. Four newcomers were drawn in with Switzerland’s Benoit Truc in an intriguing proposition. In the end, though, the experience proved to be the key factor as Truc stopped the newcomers, losing just one set in the process. A fantastic first career title for Truc.

Men's B Singles
In the men's B singles, Italian top-10 badminton player Scalvini took revenge on Bürgi in the first round and went on to win the tournament. For Bürgi the tournament ended satisfactorily after two wins on the the 5th place satisfactorily (best looser).

Men's Seniors +60
Last but not least the Swiss team could celebrate another bronze medal won by the King himself. Everyone is probably asking how many medals Graham already has won on the tour after all these years.

As always on Malta, the vacation feeling and the activities off the off the court. It was again a wonderful experience and can only be recommended for the next years.
